The long term effects of sleep deprivation can be very serious, and detrimental to your health. Not the least of which, are the adverse effects on the functionality of the brain. For example, a study back in 2000, by the Ucsd School of treatment and the Veterans Affairs Healthcare system in San Diego, had utilized functional Mri (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) to monitor the brain action in sleep deprived persons performing straightforward verbal learning tasks. What the study had shown was that regions of the part of the brain known as the prefrontal cortex had displayed more action in sleepier subjects.
Depending on the single task, it seems the brain would sometimes exertion to compensate for the adverse effects caused by significant sleeplessness. What this means is that the brain is forced to reroute its functions in other than natural manners, which can lead to other long term effects of sleep deprivation. The temporal lobe, which is a region of the brain involved in the processing of language, was activated during verbal learning activities in rested subjects, while in the sleep deprived subjects, this was not the case.
